Mary, however, had one of the first small cameras with short exposure, enabling her to document such fleeting moments as a child’s smile, a fast-moving chicken, or spontaneous family moments. Mary’s collection includes two startlingly powerful images of a snowman. No one had ever seen this on film before. Following her marriage to a reverend in 1857, and because of her distaste at photography’s increasing commercialism, Mary never took another photo of a snowman again and gave up photography forever. Any two-dimensional artwork of a snowman before this time is not only either a drawing or a painting, it is extremely rare.
